What is our mission here at Marla Quilts Inc?

Our mission is to magnify underrepresented voices & stories from the Civil War to the Civil Rights movement and beyond.

Marla Quilts Inc provides an impetus for community members of all ages to continue developing artistic skills, enhance individual and communal expression through visual literacy, and further intellectual & cultural awareness of issues surrounding African American history in Lawrence, KS. We do this through community-based arts education programs, exhibitions, and public events, including the National African American Quilt Convention.

Who is Maria Rogers Martin?

Meet the Artist

Marla Jackson is a renowned quilter and textile artist who also serves as director of the African American Quilt Museum and Textile Academy located in Lawrence, KS. 

Marla’s quilts — which take inspiration from oral histories of her ancestors, historical figures, and the Kansas region — have been exhibited at more than 35 national and international venues, including the American Folk Art Museum, the Museum of Biblical Art, KU’s Spencer Museum of Art, the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Marla’s aim is to educate, empower, and inspire our community by sharing these powerful stories…for Maria and for all freedom seekers in a world where human rights can still feel hard won.
